Call for entries is the first activity on the festival programme. The call of entries entails inviting filmmakers from cross the universe to submit their films to the annual Slum Film Festival.
The competitive film categories of SFF represent the main tendencies of audio-visual production in the slums. As it can be observed, short formats are the most common creations in the slums, which can be seen as optimal starting points for larger and more developed projects in the future. SFF also invites submissions for non-competitive entries. Such entries will be considered for screenings during the festival period. The films will however not be considered for any award.
SFF will keep its tradition of short films, however for this year’s entries SFF will consider any shorts that is not more than 30 minutes long.
The films to be selected will be required to have a strong social theme that is relevant to the MDGS or the current SDGs
The awards in the competitive category are in 7 categories namely:
- The Slum Voice Award
- Best African Film
- Best Documentary Film
- Best Short Film (narrative)
- Best Community News Piece
- Judges Choice Award
- Peoples Choice Category
The call is widely shared on Facebook, Website, and Twitter. It is also posted on special websites like which enables filmmakers to submit films online without necessarily providing DVDs for their films. Filmmakers are also able to submit entry forms on the same platforms, which are easily downloadable.
The 2016 edition will only accept film entries via FilmFreeway.
